What is norovirus?

How to prevent it?

Come and learn with the publisher.

What is norovirus?

Norovirus, formerly known as Norwalk virus, belongs to calicivirus family. The virus has the characteristics of short incubation period, rapid mutation, strong environmental resistance, diverse transmission routes and low infection dose, so it is easy to spread among people.

Everyone is generally susceptible to the virus.

The duration of immune protection after human infection with norovirus is short, so the same person can be repeatedly infected with the same strain or with different types of norovirus.

Norovirus infection can occur all year round, and October to March is the high season of Norovirus epidemic in China. Every 213 years, new strains of norovirus can appear, which cause global epidemic.

What are the main symptoms?

The incubation period of norovirus infection is usually 24-48 hours, with a minimum of 12 hours and a maximum of 72 hours.

Norovirus gastroenteritis is generally mild, the most common symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea, followed by nausea, abdominal pain, headache, fever, chills and muscle aches. The symptoms of norovirus acute gastroenteritis in adults and children are different, with vomiting as the main symptom in children and diarrhea as the main symptom in adults.

Norovirus gastroenteritis is a self-limited disease with acute onset, and most patients can recover within 213 days after onset. But for infants, the elderly, especially those with basic diseases, norovirus gastroenteritis can lead to more serious symptoms such as dehydration.

How should norovirus gastroenteritis be treated?

Norovirus gastroenteritis patients do not need to take antibiotics, but should replenish water in time to prevent dehydration. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) can help patients replenish water and balance electrolytes. When vomiting or diarrhea symptoms are serious, you should seek medical advice in time.

Which routes are susceptible to norovirus infection?

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus, which is mainly transmitted through the faecal route.

The feces and vomit of patients with norovirus gastroenteritis contain a large number of viruses, which can easily cause infection if not handled properly. Inhalation of aerosol produced by patients’ feces or vomit, ingestion of food or water contaminated by feces or vomit, and indirect contact with the surface of environmental objects contaminated by feces or vomit may all cause norovirus infection.

How to prevent norovirus infection?

At present, there are no specific antiviral drugs and vaccines for Norovirus, and its prevention and control mainly adopt non-pharmaceutical preventive measures.

The most important and effective measures to prevent communication

Wash your hands correctly according to the 7-step washing method before and after meals, and wash them with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds. It should be noted that the use of sterilized paper towels and hand sanitizer without washing can not replace hand washing.

Please wash your hands after the following operations: using the bathroom, changing diapers, caring for patients, touching animals or cleaning up animal droppings, handling raw food, wiping your nose, coughing or sneezing, disposing of garbage, taking public transport or using public facilities, etc.

Please wash your hands before preparing or distributing food, eating, taking care of patients, etc.

If a family member is infected with norovirus, the sick family member should try not to have close contact with other healthy family members, especially not to cook or take care of the elderly and infants.

Wash fruits and vegetables carefully and cook food correctly, especially the high-risk food infected with norovirus such as shellfish and seafood should be thoroughly cooked.

Patients with norovirus gastroenteritis should be actively isolated at home until 2 days after the symptoms completely disappear (because patients still have a small amount of detoxification after the symptoms completely disappear) to avoid transmitting the virus to others, especially those engaged in the service industry and collective institutions, such as chefs, nursing workers, school and kindergarten teachers.

In case of Norovirus gastroenteritis aggregation or outbreak, comprehensive disinfection should be done, focusing on disinfection of environmental surfaces, daily necessities, food processing tools, drinking water, etc. contaminated by patients’ vomit, feces and other pollutants, and chlorine-containing disinfectants are the most commonly used.

How to disinfect patients’ vomit and feces?

Use disposable absorbent materials such as gauze and rag dipped with chlorine-containing disinfectant (the concentration of available chlorine is 5000mg/L-10000mg/L) to completely cover the pollutants, and carefully remove them. The cleaned pollutants shall be treated as medical wastes in a centralized way, or soaked in disinfectant containing 5000mg/L of available chlorine for 30min before treatment.

Sufficient chlorine-containing disinfectant (the concentration of available chlorine is 5000mg/L-10000mg/L) can be poured into the toilet for more than 30 minutes.

Tools used in cleaning, such as mops, rags and containers containing pollutants, must be soaked in disinfectant containing 5000mg/L of available chlorine for 30 minutes and then thoroughly rinsed before they can be used again. Mops for cleaning toilets in collective units should be dedicated.
